Douglas Conrad, MD

Director, UC San Diego Adult CF Program.  Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UC San Diego Medical Center and the San Diego VA Health Care System.  Professor of Medicine in the UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Douglas J. Conrad MD has been caring for adult patients with Cystic Fibrosis since August of 1989, first as a pulmonary fellow and later as a co-director at the UC San Francisco and then later as director of the UC San Diego Adult CF Clinic.  He has a long term interest in the regulation of airway inflammation and particularly the role of the airway epithelium in modulating inflammatory responses.  More recently, he has focused on the describing the viral and microbial communities in the CF airway and how ecological principles might lead to better control of the chronic airway infection and the subsequent inflammatory response.  He is very active in the CF Foundation’s Therapeutic Development Network and has served on both the Protocol Review and Steering Committees.

Dr. Conrad graduated from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1984.  His training continued as an internal medicine intern and resident at the University of Minnesota Affiliated Hospitals.  In 1988, he started his pulmonary training at UC San Francisco where he stayed on as an assistant professor until 1996.  After a move to San Diego, he started the UC San Diego Adult Program where he continues to direct its clinical, educational and research missions.
